Australia is reintroducing two major new visas in December!

The Australian Department of Home Affairs has just launched two exciting skilled migration pathways – the Skills in Demand Visa (SID) and the National Innovation Visa (NIV) – designed to meet Australia’s growing workforce needs and attract top global talent.

These visas are part of Australia’s forward-thinking strategy to bring in high-calibre professionals and exceptional talent from a wide range of industries to support a thriving and innovative economy.

With these two new visas, set to be launched by the end of 2024, let’s take a quick look at the basics of both visas:

Key Updates to the New Skilled Visa Changes 2024

Skills in Demand Visa (SID) – Subclass 482   National Innovation Visa (NIV) – Subclass 858  
Replaces: Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, with existing TSS streams closing to new applications soon.   Replaces: Global Talent Visa but remains a Subclass 858 visa.  
Visa Validity: Up to 4 years, with a pathway to permanent residency.   Pathway: Direct permanent residency.  
Streams: Three streams available:   
– Specialist Skills: For high earners (min. $135,000) in most occupations (excludes trades, machinery operators, drivers, and laborers). 
– Core Skills: For skilled employees with a new occupation list and income threshold. 
– Labour Agreement: Renamed as Skills in Demand Labour Agreement.
For Exceptional Talent: Open to diverse high-achieving individuals, including: 
– Researchers and Thought Leaders: Recognized through publications, citations, or awards. 
– Entrepreneurs: Both established and emerging. 
– Innovative Investors: Emphasis on quality investments. 
– Athletes and Creatives: Particularly those representing Australia internationally.  
Sponsorship Requirement: Must have an employer sponsor.   Application Requirement: Must be nominated and invited via an Expression of Interest (EOI).  
English Requirement: Competent English.   English Requirement: Functional English or pay a second VAC.  
Work Experience: Reduced to 1 year.   Work Experience: No specific requirements, broad acceptance based on exceptional talent.  
Age and Occupation Restrictions: Any age. Excludes certain occupations like trades, machinery operators, drivers, and laborers.   Age and Occupation Restrictions: Any age, with no occupation restrictions.
